The Price Of Greed Finds It's Way Into Non-League Football

There are times when a tweet draws completely the wrong response. Well, it might not be the response that was expected to follow, or was it, depends how inflammatory it is.

These aren’t mine either as the first posting but if I pick up on something I feel is completely wrong then I will jump on it. I know I’m not alone with that, but I keep it respectful and where possible I’ll back it up with facts.

See, the beauty of social media is a place to express an opinion. Debate is healthy, but since it’s possible to tap away on a phone or keyboard, remain anonymous and spout whatever vile nonsense should remain in the brain and not reach fingers it’s not for the faint hearted at times.

The draw for the Emirates FA Cup 3rd Round a few weeks back pulled out a corker of a tie, National League Tamworth at home to Premier League Tottenham Hotspur. Not many non-league clubs made it through to this round, the Lambs getting a plum draw.

The content below was originally paywalled.

Snuck in between this Xmas and New year period the club released their prices for the said cup tie and boy, did they get it massively wrong on so many counts. I wouldn’t have been surprised if the Tamworth admin popped his phone in a dark cupboard such was the response.

The graphic below shows the prices they released on Saturday morning to charge everyone for the upcoming game in a couple of weeks’ time and to say they’ve been greedy is an understatement.

It’s almost an embarrassment to consider them a non-league club for what they’ve put together. Just for clarity here is what they charge for a National League match week in, week out.

I don’t have too much issue with raising adult prices but sensibly. They have doubled their ticket price for an adult for both areas of the stadium, already that’s pure ridiculous, will Tamworth play doubly well in return for the cash parted with?

Both terrace and stand tickets should have been capped at £30, Spurs aren’t going to grumble at these prices, their fans are used to them every week!

Concessions, those pensioners who don’t work for a living, some probably waiting a good few years to watch Tamworth against one of the top sides in the country, their prices have more than doubled!

Under 17’s prices are tripled for a seat in the stand, almost the same for a spot on the terrace.

And the real grubby greed of the Tamworth board of directors, Under 10’s are FREE for National League matches. To take your 5 year old please shell out at least £25 for the privilege. Now if that doesn’t scream out at you nothing will.

Now there are a few out there and they are a few saying it’s a one off game and they should be making as much money as they can. Yes, they should, but NOT by fleecing your own loyal supporters who have waited for a game of this magnitude for a long time and now find themselves priced out.

Imagine those mums and dads telling their kids they can’t afford to take them to watch history being made because their club deem it more worthy to make a quick buck and fill the ground with neutrals who won’t create any kind of atmosphere, what kind of message does that send?!

Bend over for the merchandise, up the food prices for a one off occasion but don’t bite the hand that feeds you week after week. It’s so short sighted and naïve, a few comments want Spurs to really stuff them instead of the country routing for the underdog.

It’s really left a sour taste across Twitter/X and there weren’t too many able to sensibly justify it, some suggesting the loss of replays causing them to do so, but that’s no justification to suggest they would be level at 90 minutes anyway, it’s a hollow argument.

Do we expect to see Millwall offer to raise their prices for the visit of Dagenham & Redbridge just in case? And before anyone get’s in their high horse there I know the Daggers are the away side but surely those replays rules as suggested above should have made the East London club request likewise?

Whether there will be a comeback to it I don’t know, it won’t be forgotten though by football fans. If my club at Barnet tried the same, I would be bashing down Tony Kleanthous’ door and I would be laying into them similar to that I have at Tamworth’s door. One 90 minutes profiteering on your own is distasteful, a massive PR disaster this has been for a club who have risen well recently through the pyramid.

NB Earlier on Monday evening the club announced main stand tickets had sold out already, which should be in the hands of season ticket and membership holders, appears though terrace tickets could be a free for all with no ticketing history needed.
